Jechtingen

Spätrömisches Kastell Sponeck

Wahrzeichen von Jechtingen (Gemeinde Sasbach a. K) ist der mittelalterliche Turm der Burg Sponeck. Vor 40 Jahren wurde hier ein spätrömisches Kastell ausgegraben. Heute ist es die einzige Stelle zwischen Basel und Mannheim, an der eine Wehranlage aus spätrömischer Zeit zu besichtigen ist. Vor der Rheinregulierung durch Tulla im 19. Jahrhundert lag das Kastell direkt am Rhein. Zur Zeit der Römer diente es vermutlich als befestigter Hafen für die römische Kriegsflotte und zur Sicherung des Rheinüberganges an dieser Stelle. Die Anlage samt Garten mit modernen Skulpturen der „Konkreten Kunst“ ist in Privatbesitz, jedoch in der Regel frei zugänglich.
