Müllheim

Villa rustica

Unter der heute für Konzerte, Ausstellungen und weitere Kulturveranstaltungen genutzten Kirche St. Martin in Müllheim liegt das Hauptgebäude eines römischen Gutshofs, der zu den größten Anlagen am Ostrand des Oberrheintals zählt. Der Platz für den römischen Landwirtschaftsbetrieb war gut gewählt: ein terrassenartiger Vorsprung auf einem Moränenhügel bot sicheren Grund und weiten Blick über die Rheinebene. Einen Überblick über die römische Besiedlung der Region und die Eigenarten der villae rusticae, der römischen Einzelhöfe, bietet die Dauerausstellung im Markgräfler Museum im Blankenhorn-Palais, direkt am Müllheimer Marktplatz.
